With a great yawn and a stretch of his forelegs, Howlstar made his way out of the warrior's den. Leader of ShadowClan though he was, since receiving his nine lives and leader's name from StarClan, it had been difficult for the tom to transition in to sleeping in the esteemed "Leader's den" on camp. He found it much more relaxing to continue sleeping in the warrior's den with his beloved Clanmates...
Well, considering it was still early yet, (the dawn patrol must have already gone out, he figured) Howlstar silently moved across the camp to his favorite spot, a sunny patch of clovers.
It was there he settled in, enjoying the tranquility of the morning hours by giving himself a good grooming.

"Hey! Howlstar!" A high-pitched voice rang through the quiet air. A blur of black fur toppled into the bigger tom. Playfully, the young tom nipped at Howlstar's ear.
Seemingly satisfied, Lunarpaw smiled and sat down on the ground next to his mentor.
"Did I miss the dawn patrol? I slept in again didn't I?" He looked up towards the sky, the sun already well over the horizon. "Yep missed it again. Darn it!"

...At the initial screech, even Howlstar flinched as if something had exploded right beside him. His whole body bristled, and he even gnashed his teeth--accidentally chomping down on the tip of his tongue in the process.
"Ack!" The leader shook his head, wincing at the pain from his tongue, even going so far as to over-dramatically lick his lips, trying to soothe the ache. Only once it calmed (and he realized that no blood had been drawn) did he refocus upon his young apprentice, sighing exasperatedly. So much for that morning tranquility. "Lunarpaw! What has you so energetic this morning?"

The young tom licked his paw as he looked at his mentor. "I don't know! I'm just really excited today!" As if to reinforce his statement, Lunarpaw jumped up from his sitting position and sprang over Howlstar.
"Can we go hunting today! Please, please, please?!"

In spite of it all, Howlstar found himself smiling at his apprentice--quite warmly, at that.
High energy aside, he was rather fond of Lunarpaw. Had been since he'd found the kit so many moons ago.
"Alright, Lunarpaw," he chuckled as he heaved himself to his paws, and began to lead the way out of camp. "We'll go and hunt a little. Stay close, now!"

Lunarpaw was jumping up and down with excitement. He loved going hunting with his mentor, even if he wasn't the greatest at it. Though his body was small, he made up for it with agility and stamina.
"Alright! I can't wait to finally get my first kill! Today is the day! I can feel it!"

He couldn't help giving a laugh, although as they got out in to the forest, even Howlstar began to turn more serious. Hunting wasn't a light-hearted matter, after all, and if Lunarpaw was going to be a warrior, he also needed to be a hunter that the Clan could rely on.
And it was up to Howlstar to reign in enough of that energy in order to teach him.
"Now, Lunarpaw," he murmured, tugging the young cat aside in some brambles and speaking quietly. "Remember, you're here to find prey. And if you're loud, the prey will run. So, quiet down, and I want you to scent the air. Tell me what you smell."

Mistakepelt opened her blue eyes, blinking the sleep out of them. She stretched before walking slowly out of the Warrior's den. She stalked of to a far, shadowy corner of the camp, her tail twitching nervously. She watched the other cats stir and wake up. She looked away quickly, tossing her patchy and striped tail. She put her head on her paws, ignoring a bit of teasing from a group of kits that had wandered over to bug her.

"Hey!" spat another she-cat as she came trotting out of the warrior's den. The kits all flinched and halted their teasing to look up at the warrior as she approached.
Oceanbell didn't seem to be in a good mood that morning. Still, that didn't keep her from hissing at the kits. "Knock that off! Go back to the nursery before I bat you all in to Carrionplace!"
The kittens immediately scattered, rushing to do as told and promptly leaving Mistakepelt alone.
With them gone, however, Oceanbell curled her lip, and leered at her fellow warrior.
"Come on, Mistakepelt. Are you really going to let a bunch of kits tease you like that?"

Mistakepelt shook her head. "I was called a mistake all my life, I was treated like one." She mewed, looking up at Oceanbell. She sat up, meeting the she cat's eyes. "I'm not hurt by their teasing." She said. She flicked her spotted tail. "They just come about to pester, they aren't a bother. They aren't like the others when I was younger." Blinking, she added, "They're mother just believes I'm a mistake, just because I'm different."

"I never understood that," Oceanbell huffed as she sat beside Mistakepelt. Not within touching distance, of course, but close enough to comfortably hold their conversation.
"Why were you the mess-up? What makes you so different from me or even Howlstar?" The she-cat flicked her tail-tip irritably.

Lunarpaw listened intently. He wanted to get it right this time and show his mentor that he was good warrior material. Lowering his body closer to the ground, his ears perked up. They twitched as the young cat listened to his surroundings.
Apart from the usual sounds of the wilderness, Lunarpaw couldn't hear anything else. Just as he was about to say something, a twig snapped nearby.
There, on the other side of the bush.
He moved quickly and quietly. His eyes narrowed as they fell on their prey, an unsuspecting rat. Gotcha! His legs kicked up and sent him through the air towards the rat.
He noticed the hole in the ground too late. In his haste, he had forgotten to measure the distance of his jump. Front paws landed in the hole. It was shallow enough so that his body lay in an awkward angle. Head against one end of the hole and his butt sticking up in the air at the other.
His prey had scurried away. "Uh Howlstar, a little help please?" Lunarpaw couldn't believe this. Not only had he failed horribly, but he did it in front of his mentor.

And all Howlstar could do was... sigh.
Clearly, they still had a long way to go until Lunarpaw's final assessment.
"Hold still," the leader ordered before fixing his teeth in the smaller tom's scruff, helping him to find his paws and get out of the hole.
Once Lunarpaw was upright, Howlstar told him to sit right where he was, and followed suit himself, curling his tail daintily around his paws.
"Tell me why you missed your mark, Lunarpaw," he instructed quietly. "What do you think you did wrong?"

Lunarpaw was still too embarrassed as he sat on the ground. He wished he could just melt into the ground and disappear for a while. His heterochromic eyes avoiding his mentor.
With a sigh, he looked at Howlstar. "I didn't time my jump. I was so excited that I forgot to measure the distance to my prey."

Only once, Howlstar nodded his head.
And then the lecture began.
"You also didn't scent properly. Use your nose and your eyes, dear apprentice--not your ears."
And then, with a sigh, he reached a paw out to gently thunk it between Lunarpaw's ears.
"Also... don't chase after rats again. ShadowClan cats are not so desperate as to feed on them. We have mice in this part of the forest, squirrels, frogs, and birds too. We'll hunt them, but not the rats. Rats are our enemy. Never you forget that, hm?"
He finally let the younger tom up, and then nodded his head to the trees. "Try again. What can you smell?"

Mistakepelt shrugged. "I guess it's because of my pelt." She mewed, twitching her nose. "It's stripy in areas and spotted in others."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Naturekit slipped silently out of the Nursery, spotting Mistakepelt out of all of the other cats in the camp. He scampered over to her, not noticing Oceanbell. He ignored the other kits who shouted out to him and his kin about being friends of 'the mistake' and always spending as much time as they possibly could with her. "Hello Mistakepelt." The young tom mewed, turning his head, he dipped it in respect to Oceanbell. "Hello Oceanbell." He said, flicking his tail.
If it was one thing about Oceanbell, it was the fact that most of the time in a conversation, she failed to hold her tongue or even think about her words before saying them.
That still held true right then as, after Mistakepelt said what she did, Oceanbell immediately rolled her eyes and hissed. "Oh, please. Pelts don't make a warrior! Every cat in the forest knows that!"
She probably would have continued on had Naturekit not appeared; Oceanbell hesitated for a moment, and then, sporting a frown and with tail twitching by her paws, she grumbled a quiet greeting to the kitten.
Lunarpaw's head was dipped down in shame. He hadn't even looked to see what the prey was before he tried to jump it. Okay one more time. I got this. He had to do better this time or he'd be a laughing stalk in the clan. He dropped down, belly against the ground.
Nose and eyes. Nose and eyes. His ears perked up at a sound to his left, though he didn't jump right in this time. His heterochromic eyes darted towards the sound. A bush obscured his view, but he could smell a squirrel on the other side.
Alright I can do this. My prey is right behind that bush. Darting through it will cause too much noise so my other option is to go around.
Moving quietly, the young apprentice crept to the edge of the bush and peered around. The squirrel had his back to Lunarpaw. With a swift movement, the black cat was at his target. Teeth sank into the squirrels neck and held it down.
I did it!
Only seconds after Lunarpaw made his kill, Howlstar was peering around the edge of the bush, grinning huge with pride and joy.
"Excellent catch!" He meowed, coming over to affectionately flick his tail against Lunarpaw's shoulder. "You see? A little patience makes a world of difference, doesn't it?"
