Fishtail watched Shadepaw through hanging leaves. The younger cat looked defeated. Fishtail's ears lowered, wondering what Shadepaw was thinking. Fishtail debated leaving his cover and going to Shadepaw, but decided against it. He wanted to know what Shadepaw would do when prey wasn't easily found.

Shadepaw padded slowly back to his buried mouse and dug it up. After a few moments of staring at it in defeat he straightened up, I'll prove myself in battle. I need to find something to fight.

Fishtail continued to watch his apprentice, but he was getting bored and continually distracted by the forest around him.

Shadepaw flexed his claws, looking around for something to fight, despite having already searched the area for prey. Without finding anything he chose a root that stuck out of the ground and crept toward it. He lunged from three tail-lengths away and undershot, having misjudged the distance. He barreled head-first into the root. "Mouse-dung!" He scrambled back, looking around and hoping nobody had seen him.

Fishtail was trying contain a yawn, when he noticed Shadepaw stalking a tree root. Fishtail immediately sat up, eyes intent on his apprentice. He could barely contain himself when Shadepaw ran head first into the root. He fell over, while trying not to make a sound.

Shadepaw went back to his starting point and crouched again. He crept back up on the root, this time paying more attention to the distance. When he judged he was in range he pounced forward, landing on top of the root. He clawed a couple times at the top, then reached his right forepaw under the root. His claws hooked the wood and tore it away, throwing shards of the root around the grass. He stared at the woodchips and smiled, imagining what it would look like if the root had been an animal.

Fishtail managed to compose himself and return his attention to Shadepaw, just as Shadepaw landed on top of the root. Fishtail smiled, impressed by the apprentice's moves, even if his opponent was just a root.

Shadepaw bit into the root, closing his jaws as hard as he could. After a few moments of resistance the root gave in and shattered in the apprentice's mouth. He jumped off the root, spitting out the remnants of the root. A smile lit his face, then disappeared as he spit out another splinter, blood with it.

Fishtail shivered, he was both impressed and a little frightened by the intensity of Shadepaw's attack.

Shadepaw stuck out his tongue as more blood filled his mouth. "Blech," He spat, trying to clean out the blood. The wound on the side of his mouth slowly stopped bleeding.
"That's nasty," He said as the blood stopped flowing.

The sight of blood concerned Fishtail, but he stayed where he was.

Shadepaw went back to his mouth and bent down to pick it up, then paused, concerned about getting his blood on it. He looked up, searching for someway to transport the mouse without spoiling it.

Fishtail shifted his position. A flutter of feathers caught his eye. A crow had landed not three tail lengths from him. He crouched and moved forward quietly, eyes intent on his prey. The crow still hadn't noticed him when he was a tail length away, behind a patch of tall grass. Fishtail wiggled his haunches and sprang forward. He landed on the birds back. It spread its long wings and falpped them in Fishtail's face. He quickly nipped its neck and it went limp.

Shadepaw looked around when he heard the bird's wings. He scented the air and picked up Fishtail's scent. "Fishtail?" He called out, "How long have you been here?"

Fishtail picked up the bird and trotted over to Shadepaw. Dropping the bird on the ground he said. "Hi, Shadepaw! Not long." He flicked feathers from his fur. "Are you out hunting? Is that blood? Did you hurt yourself?"

Shadepaw let out a quiet sigh of relief, "I wanted to prove I'll be the best warrior in the clan!" He looked down at the blood, "I just bit my cheek, I'm fine."
