Stormpaw ducked, giving away his answer straight away. "Um.. duck?" He said anyway. He eyed the boulder above him. Voidheart had to lean down to be able to reach him, but in Stormpaw's opinion, reach up would be futile and a waste of energy. "I could duck until you get tired of me ducking and jump down?"

Voidheart nodded. "You could." He jumped from the ledge and landed on Stormpaw's back, pinning his apprentice to the ground. Void heart winced as the pain in his paw increased. "But than you give your opponent even more of an advantage."

Stormpaw gritted his teeth. "But then you can just shake. Them. Off." He growled, attempting to throw Voidheart off. Even with a twisted paw, however, Voidheart proved far too strong and heavy for Stormpaw to bear. He huffed, and relaxed his muscles. "Okay then. What."

Voidheart stepped off Stormpaw. "Right now, you don't have the advantage over a full grown warrior, maybe in a few moons, but even then there may be warriors bigger and heavier than you. They'll have the advantage of size and strength. You won't be able to out muscle them." Voidheart jumped back onto the ledge. "So, what do you do so that your enemy won't bring the fight down to you? Or at least keep them from bringing an unfair advantage?"

Keeping strong to his view that swatting back at uneven heights would be far too inconvenient, Stormpaw figured there was only one other option. "I could jump up to join them there." He suggested and, bracing his hindlegs, leaped up onto the boulder, ending up practically nose-to-nose with Voidheart.

Voidheart, taken aback by Stormpaw's move, instinctively shoved him away, sending him off the ledge. Voidheart hissed, having used his injured paw. "Good idea, but you'd have to get a good enough purchase to stay on the ledge, but your opponent would still have more of an advantage." Voidheart crouched on the ledge. He reached down his good paw. "Now look at what I'm doing. Any enemy coming from above is going to distract you until he's ready to jump down to meet you. This position is awkward for both sides, but I still have the advantage. What you have to do is give yourself the advantage." Voidheart shifted again and leaned farther over. "You need to find a way to unbalance your enemy. Watch them for when they are about to jump down. Try to claw and bite what you can reach."

Stormpaw was immediately pushed back and left scrabbling at air. Thankfully, the boulder wasn't high and he managed to land on all four of his paws, but the move had still left him surprised and even slightly shocked. Shaking off the minor fright, he turned back to Voidheart, who had begun talking again.
Stormpaw grumbled. He had just been given the advice he had originally thought was wrong. Though in fairness, the way Voidheart had put it did seem more reasonable than mindlessly swatting at the crouching warrior. He nodded and jumped up, thwacking Voidheart's paw, though it had little success.
Stormpaw paused for a moment, ducking to prevent Voidheart's claws from snagging his ear. Voidheart was by hanging so low his shoulder was nearly over the edge. If he jumped high enough, Stormpaw might be able to reach it as well give it a good hit that should at least force Voidheart to roll onto his side. Taking careful aim, Stormpaw pushed himself into a jump and hit Voidheart's shoulder with as much force as he could muster, being sure to keep his claws unsheathed, before dropping back to his paws.

Voidheart wasn't surprised by Stormpaw's attack, but he was unprepared. With most of his weight on his injured paw he could not keep his balance. His paws slipped from under him and even though he tried to recover, he felt the rest of his body slipping off the ledge. He landed with an umph on the hard stone below.

And then there came giggling from a few tail-lengths away.
Applepelt had gone to search for Silverstar in hopes of cheering her leader up somehow, but the she-cat had already gone off in to the forest too quick for the young warrior to catch up. She had figured Silverstar wanted to be alone, and so, had gone to do a bit of hunting since the fresh-kill pile seemed to have spoiled overnight.
She had crept by Sunning Rocks, having been planning to go beyond there towards Tallpines, when she had noticed the bright splotch of white fur dangling from a ledge. Even at that distance she had known it to be Voidheart, and so had come over to see what her Clanmate was up to.
She was just in time, of course, to see a certain apprentice--oh, Stormpaw was there too!--launch a rather strong attack and send Voidheart completely barreling over the side of the ledge, and she couldn't keep back her laugh at the sight. He was normally so graceful on his paws! She couldn't help it!
"That was a nasty fall," she commented playfully as she padded over, purring and waving her tail in greeting to the two toms. "Are you okay, Voidheart?"

Voidheart grumbled as he tried to right himself. He didn't like others laughing at him, especially she cats. He finally managed to pull himself to his paws again. He shook the dust from her fur. "I'm fine." His paw hurt even more now.

Applepelt didn't immediately notice Voidheart's injured paw. She just kept smiling in that innocent way of hers, purring along.
"What are you two doing? Battle-training?"

Stormpaw took a step back to avoid getting flattened by the tumbling Voidheart. It was quite a hard fall, and Stormpaw couldn't help but feel just a little bit proud. Just as he was about to speak up, Applepelt came up behind them. Stormpaw watched the exchange in silence for a moment, eyeing Voidheart and his paw. His mood clearly hadn't improved with the fall.
"Yes." He replied shortly to Applepelt, before motioning with his tail to Voidheart's paw. "Is your paw okay? Should we go back to camp?" He questioned him, thinking perhaps it wouldn't even be a bad idea to drop in to the medicine cat den.

Voidheart tested his paw. Just touching it to the ground made him wince. He opened his mouth, about to say that he was fine, but thought better of it. He wasn't doing Stormpaw's training any good with an injured paw. "I guess that's enough training for one day." Voidheart said. "Let's check the borders before heading back, though."

Stormpaw hrmphed, "All right." He didn't particularly enjoy border patrol, but it was something he knew he would have to do and possibly even lead as a warrior, so he might as well get started. It seemed pointless though, there was never anything to defend the borders from. He turned back to Applepelt, "Are you coming too?" He asked the clearly contented she-cat.

Voidheart's paw was hurt? Applepelt perked up her ears with surprise, and found herself looking at the white-furred tom, suddenly picking the injury out rather easily. It looked painful. She wondered how it could be treated; maybe just keeping off it for a while? Or were there herbs that could be used?
When Stormpaw asked if she would be joining them, his question snapped her out of a thoughtful state, and for a few seconds, she looked surprised.
"Hm? Oh! Um! I can, if that's okay," she swished her tail a little, offering a cheery smile. "I was just going to go hunt since the fresh-kill pile went bad overnight..."

"It's fine" Voidheart mewed, He liked the idea of the pretty she cat joining them. "We can hunt as we go." Voidheart took a step and winced, "Well, you two can." He lifted his paw off the ground completely, deciding it might be better to not put any of his weight on it.

Giving a bit of a purr, and that same big smile, Applepelt moved with swift paws to Voidheart's bad side. "Here," she meowed, all but beaming with her tail arced high over her back. "You can lean on me, if you want. As long as you don't hurt your paw even more, we don't have to rush."

"Thanks." Voidheart gratefully accepted her help. He felt his fur brush hers and her sweet scent descended on him. He stifled a purr. Slightly embarrassed, he turned to Stormpaw. "Don't forget the mouse you caught earlier."

Stormpaw nodded. It seemed their gradually thinning day was gaining some momentum after all. He was just about to dash off along the border, in search of some trespassing Riverclan warriors, or something exciting to catch, like a squirrel, when he heard Voidheart's voice and dashed back to dig up his mouse. He grinned sheepishly, before continuing again on his way at a much slower pace than previously, partly to hide his embarrassment, and partly so that Voidheart and Applepelt could keep up.

Voidheart followed Stormpaw slowly with Applepelt beside him. It was a bittersweet moment. While he enjoyed the closeness with the she-cat he also didn't like how much he needed her support to get around.
He tried to push the feelings away, but his pride was hurting. He wanted to show off, but instead he was practically helpless.
