When Flicktail got back to camp, the sun was barely reaching its high-point in the sky, but it was so hot and muggy that he was pretty sure his back was burning right through his pelt.
He had a number of fresh kills with him, but as he stood on the lip of the gorge and stared down in to the expanse of his Clan's camp, something made his ears droop--and for a moment or two, his eyes hardened.
His Clan was... small. Smaller than he remembered. And not just because a bunch of cats were out and about in the territory. They just didn't have very many Clanmates.
Granted, leaf-bare had been hard, and in new-leaf, the river had gone over its banks and threatened to flood out most of the camp. But surely those events hadn't been so catastrophic to the once-proud SkyClan?
Well... he couldn't just stand there pondering it, much as he would have liked.
Tail arced up, the Deputy began to make his way down towards the gorge floor, and the very small remains of the fresh-kill pile where he deposited all the prey he'd caught.
The heat was something awful, though, and despite how his stomach rumbled, Flicktail turned away from the pile.
The river was calling his name. He definitely needed a good, long soak in the cool water.

Bubblefur stood at the entrance of the warrior's den. He could feel the heat of the day on his face and was reluctant to leave the cool cave. He grunted and bounded out of the cave. If a little heat stopped a warrior of Skyclan than the clan would surely die out.
The rock burned his paws, so he moved quickly down into the gorge. He headed straight for the river. He didn't stop until his throbbing paws were soothed by the cool silver water. He looked around, maybe he could fish today.

When he heard the trampling of paws, followed by a splash a few paces further down from him, Flicktail pricked up his ears and glanced over with a blink.
When he saw it was his Clanmate, Bubblefur, a bit of a grin formed, and the deputy allowed himself to drift closer.
"Couldn't stand the heat either, huh?" he purred.

Bubblefur glanced up, a bit surprised to see Flicktail. He hadn't noticed the deputy, all his attention was on the heat and how to relieve it.
He nodded. "I don't imagine the prey can either." He glanced at the freshkill pile. "Did you catch all that? You must have gotten up early." Bubblefur mewed, impressed.

Sheepishly, Flicktail allowed his paws to slip along the riverbed so that his chin just about touched the top of the water. Still though; he grinned.
"Yes, I was up with the dawn patrol. Here's hoping it lasts until the sun starts to go down."

Bubblefur lay down in the shallows. He purred as the cool water soaked into his fur, easing the hot itchiness in his pelt. He passed a wet paw over his ears.
"Hopefully, if it doesn't I was thinking about looking for some fish later on." Bubblefur said.
After a moment, Bubblefur added, "Maybe you'd like to join me?"

Fish? Flicktail almost licked his lips at the thought. He'd always enjoyed the taste of fish, but SkyClan tended to rely more on land-dwelling prey to eat since they were easier to catch.
That didn't mean they didn't know how to catch fish, though, and it'd been a while since the deputy had eaten one!
"I'd be honored!" He purred. "Maybe once it starts to cool off and I actually feel like getting out of the water, we can do that."

Bubblefur purred. "Great." Bubblefur moved farther into the water to reach even cooler water. "I hope this heat let's up soon."

"Yes, I agree," Flicktail purred contently. "Although, perhaps our Clanmates wouldn't be so opposed to spending the day in the river instead of doing our regular duties. Everyone works so hard--we should have a day off once in a while."

Bubblefur nodded his agreement. He briefly ducked his head under the water, enjoying the cool water on his face and ears.
He surfaced with a contented sigh. "I guess sometimes it's a good thing to have a small clan."

The deputy purred in agreement, letting the river carry his weight for a while. His tail drifted along the surface, pulled by the current--and after only a short while, he started to chuckle to himself.

Bubblefur lowered his head until his chin touched the surface of the water. He half closed his eyes and let his mind wander.
It was a moment before he registered Flicktail's chuckling. He lifted his head. He flicked his ears a little annoyed by the humor disturbing his peace.
"What's so funny?" Bubblefur asked, not unkindly.

"I was just thinking, is all," Flicktail laughed quietly to himself. "Entertaining the thought of everyone taking a day off. It doesn't sound like such a bad idea."

Bubblefur thought about that for a moment. He immediately thought they idea was ridiculous, although it was tempting to just lounge around all the time.
Bubblefur flicked his tail out of the water. "Then we wouldn't be a clan anymore, we'd be a bunch of stray cats." Bubblefur voiced his opinion, not seeing anything funny about that.

"For only a day?" Flicktail wondered.
He let the current take him a little closer to Bubblefur--at least close enough that he could poke the very tip of his tail against the other tom's shoulder.
"I think a day off would do you good, for one," he purred light-heartedly.

Bubblefur thought for a moment. "Maybe not, but it would be too easy not to go back to the way it was before."
Bubblefur stared at Flicktail. "How would it be good for me?" He stood up and moved back to the shallows. He didn't bother to shake out his fur. He flicked his tail at Flicktail, sending a few water drops in the other tom's direction. "I don't need a break."

There was a slight flinch at the water drops splashing in to his face, but for the most part, Flicktail kept up his grin. He also opted to stay put in the water, finding it much more relaxing than he'd initially intended.
"Well, don't work too hard," he chuckled to his Clanmate. "You'll over-exhaust yourself. And in this heat, that's very dangerous, as you probably already know."

Bubblefur nodded. "I'll keep that in mind."
He wandered a little farther down the river, keeping to the shallows with his paws in the water. He hoped to find some fish swimming nearby.
